The monastery of Winzberg was founded in 1288. It was inhabited by the Wilhelmites, an order that followed the rules of Saint William of Malavalle. Over the centuries, the monastery shaped the spiritual and cultural life of the surrounding area. In 1558, the monastery was dissolved and secularized in the course of the Reformation, ending its existence as a religious institution. The patronage of the monastery was dedicated to Saint Werner.
