Windsor Castle

The origins of Windsor Castle date back to the time of William the Conqueror, who began constructing a wooden castle from 1078. Under Henry I, the first stone buildings were erected, and Henry III initiated the construction of modern fortifications, including the Curfew Tower. Edward III, born here in 1312, had the old castle demolished and began an extensive rebuilding program that transformed the complex into a residence, shaping its current layout. In 1348, he founded the Order of the Garter, whose annual meeting takes place in St. George's Chapel. This chapel was built in its current Gothic form from 1475 under Edward IV. Over the centuries, the castle was repeatedly adapted to the needs of the monarchs, evolving from a fortress into a comfortable palace. During the English Civil War, it served as headquarters for Oliver Cromwell's army and as a state prison. After the restoration of the monarchy under Charles II, the castle was extensively restored and expanded, with the famous Long Walk avenue being laid out.
