Wirberg

The origins of Wirberg date back to the first half of the 12th century, when a knight's castle stood here. Between approximately 1134 and 1148, the complex was converted into a Premonstratensian double monastery, largely with the involvement of Otto von Cappenberg. The foundation was established by the heiress Aurelia and the widow Immecha of the knight Manegold von Hagen und Wirberg, who were compelled to enter the monastery. The first documentary mention of the monastery dates to 1149. Its patron saints were Saint Mary and Saint Martin. By the end of the 13th century, Wirberg transformed into a pure women's monastery, with its nuns joining the Augustinian Canonesses. They systematically expanded the monastic landholdings. Following a period of prosperity in the early 15th century, economic difficulties and a fire in 1521 led to its decline. The monastery became increasingly impoverished, documented in an inventory of its possessions in 1525.

Wirberg is located in the federal state of Hesse, within the Gießen district. The complex lies on the eastern edge of the municipality of Reiskirchen, nestled between the villages of Saasen and Göbelnrod. Its geographical elevation is approximately 311 meters above sea level.

The church at Wirberg, once the central Protestant church for several surrounding Grünberg districts, now serves as a place of worship for special occasions. The historic complex remains a site for contemplation and cultural interest.
