The Witwenpalais in Eutin, a former noble city palace, is located directly on the market square of the town in Schleswig-Holstein. It is an example of the transition from late Baroque to Classicism and is considered one of Eutin's most artistically significant secular buildings.

History+

The palace was built from 1786 to 1787 as a retirement residence for Duchess Ulrike Friederike Wilhelmine of Hesse-Kassel, the widow of Duke Friedrich August I. The Duchess died in 1787, even before the building was completed, and was never able to inhabit it. Nevertheless, it retained its name. The Witwenpalais served various purposes: it was the residence of Johann Heinrich Voß, housed the court library, the town hall, storage rooms, and detention cells.
