Battenbergturm Castle

The Battenberg tower was probably built at the beginning of the 16th century, documented by an inscription of glazed bricks in 1506. It is located near the Buschkampshof, which was first mentioned in 1377. Amelongh von Escharden, a man-at-arms who was enfeoffed with the farm by Duke Johann II of Kleve in 1494, is considered the probable builder. Amelongh advanced to court messenger and later judge, which probably gave the tower its name: Batenberg, the tower (Berg) of the messenger. Originally, a larger complex with additional buildings was probably planned, as evidenced by a recognizable moat and traces of walls, which, however, were never realized. Although the property was still considered a knight's seat in 1639, it lost this status by 1674.
