Beuren Castle

Beuren was first mentioned in a document on July 7, 1128, in a court record. At that time, there was a fortified manor around which the village formed. Around 1200, a Cistercian nunnery was founded in Niederbeuren ("Buren inferior") by Konrad von Bodenstein.

Through customs and escort revenues, Beuren developed from a market village (1238 "forensi Buren") into a town (1269 "in civitate Buren").

In the center of the town, not far from the church, stands a striking round and slender-looking tower. Building records show that this tower served as the former customs tower of the town and was already present when the foundation stone for the former Beuren church was laid in 1342. A demolition of the church and tower requested in 1880 was expressly forbidden by the then Prussian Monument Authority in Erfurt with regard to the tower; subsequently, funds for the repair and preservation of the tower were even approved.
