Issum Tower (Krefeld)
The Issumer Turm is a former residential tower and landmark of the Krefeld suburb of Linn. The listed building stands at the corner of Mauerstraße/Issumer Straße.
The tower was built in the 14th century as a so-called Burgmannshaus (small tower castle with courtyard buildings) and is named after its probable first feudal lords – the knights of Issum, who originated from Geldern. However, the first documented feudal tenant was Simon von Aldenbrüggen in 1430. Subsequently, members of various Rhenish noble families resided in the former castle fief of Electoral Cologne's Linn, including the Lords of Brempt, Eyll, Preuth, von der Warth, von Nievenheim, and von Hallberg. After the tower underwent structural changes in the second half of the 18th century, the last noble owner of the tower, Count Konstantin von Hallberg, sold the property in 1854 to a master carpenter from Linn. The Issumer Turm and its outbuildings have been in private ownership since 2010.
Description+
The tower has a rectangular floor plan and walls 1.10 meters thick on the ground floor. Its three stories rise above a vaulted cellar and are topped by a mansard roof. The building marks the southeastern corner of a rectangular courtyard. To its west, leaning against the former city wall, is a single-story wing on a high plinth, which is the residential building of the ensemble. Parallel to these two buildings, to the north, lies the gatehouse. Its most striking architectural feature is the round-arched gate passage, crowned by a baroque curvilinear gable from 1775.
