The Plenzer Residential Tower – A Journey Through Time+
History and Architecture+
The Plenzer residential tower was erected in the 14th century by the Lords of Flersheim.
Originally, the tower served as a fortified residence and was part of a larger castle complex. Over the centuries, the building underwent numerous modifications and extensions. The most striking architectural features include the massive stone walls, the narrow loop windows, and the impressive gable roof.
The ground floor of the tower was primarily used for storage and as a stable, while the upper floors housed the living quarters of the noble family. A spiral staircase, still preserved today, connected the individual levels.
The Lords of Flersheim+
The Lords of Flersheim were a powerful noble family in the region, whose influence extended over several villages and estates. They played a significant role in the political and economic development of the area.
Their coat of arms, depicting three silver fleurs-de-lis on a red background, can still be found on various historical documents and buildings in the vicinity.
Current Use and Significance+
Today, the Plenzer residential tower is privately owned and is used as a residential building. Despite its residential use, the tower is regularly open to the public on special occasions, such as Heritage Day.
It is considered one of the best-preserved medieval residential towers in the region and is an important testimony to the architectural and cultural history of the area.
Restoration Efforts
In recent decades, extensive restoration efforts have been undertaken to preserve the historical substance of the tower. These measures included the renovation of the roof, the stabilization of the masonry, and the careful restoration of interior details.
The aim of these efforts is to preserve the Plenzer residential tower for future generations as a living monument to the past.
