Wolfsburg Castle

The history of Wolfsburg begins in the 13th century, when the knightly family Wolff von Rheindorf established their ancestral seat here. The first documented mention dates back to 1334, when Knight Godart von Rheindorf is named as the owner. The family's coat of arms depicts a striding wolf, which gave the estate its name. In the 14th century, the castle changed hands through marriage to Johannes von Buschfeld and in 1477, through the marriage of his daughter Margarethe, it passed to Arnold von Gymnich. The von Gymnich family held the castle for many years until their lineage died out. A weather vane from 1597 on the tower, showing a dragon with the von Gymnich coat of arms, refers to this period.
