Roman Limes Watchtower (WP 1/1)

The approximate beginning of the Limes is today marked by a privately initiated reconstruction of a Roman watchtower, located about halfway between the actual former site of the watchtower[5] and the small fort of Rheinbrohl. The original find spot has been destroyed by gravel mining.

The execution of the reconstruction, even at its time of creation in 1973, did not correspond to scientific knowledge about the appearance of Limes watchtowers and has been criticized accordingly in literature. Furthermore, during the construction of the reconstruction, the previously very well-preserved watchtower site Wp 1/8 was exploited as a quarry, which severely damaged the original findings there. In addition to the watchtower reconstruction, a copy of the tombstone of Pintaius, a signifer of Cohors V Asturum, was erected, whose original, however, was not found in Rheinbrohl, but in Bonn.
