The construction of the Zion Gate took place in 1540 under the rule of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. It was strategically designed to make it difficult for attackers to penetrate: above the entrance was an opening for boiling water, and the passage inside the gate was angled at a right angle to prevent a swift breakthrough by horsemen. The gate is also known as the “Gate of Prophet David,” as David's tomb is believed to be on the nearby Mount Zion according to Islamic tradition. During Israel's War of Independence, the Zion Gate was a key site of fierce clashes, of which visible bullet holes in the masonry still bear witness today.
