History+
The foundation of Eußerthal Abbey took place in the years 1147/1148. It was settled by Cistercian monks from the Lotharingian monastery of Villers-Bettnach. The monks initially focused on cultivating the valley. In 1186, the monastery was placed under imperial protection and subsequently received numerous endowments, including vineyards in the Southern Palatinate. A special task of the monks was guarding the Imperial Regalia at the nearby Trifels Castle in the 12th and 13th centuries. After this period, the monastery's importance declined. In the 15th century, the abbey was plundered several times. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the monastery suffered looting and arson but was later rebuilt. In the course of the Reformation, Eußerthal Abbey was dissolved in the years 1560/1561.
