Kloster Scharnebeck

The foundation of Scharnebeck Abbey took place in 1243 by monks from Hardehausen Abbey, who initially settled in Steinbeck an der Luhe. There, the monastery was founded under the patronage of Saint Mary. Ten years later, in 1253, the community relocated to Scharnebeck after Duke Otto I of Brunswick-Lüneburg gifted the monks a farm and other lands near Lüneburg. In 1531, the monastery was dissolved as part of the Reformation. The abbey church of St. Marien has since served as an Evangelical parish church. A portion of the monastic buildings was later converted into a castle and administrative office.

The former monastery is situated in Scharnebeck, a municipality northeast of Lüneburg in the federal state of Lower Saxony, Germany.

The former abbey church of St. Marien is currently used as an Evangelical church. Inside, several furnishings from the monastic period are preserved, including a sandstone Madonna statue from the early 14th century and remnants of liturgical seating, dated between 1330 and 1380. These include intricately carved side panels with pairs of animals and reliefs depicting biblical scenes such as David and Goliath.
