Zisterzienserinnenkloster Billigheim

The foundation of Billigheim Abbey occurred before 1166, with its first documented mention in that year. Originally established as a nunnery on the Schefflenz stream, it was affiliated with the Cistercian Order in 1238. Initially, it was subordinate to Ebrach Abbey and later to the nearby Schöntal Abbey. The monastery, dedicated to the Nativity of Mary and Michael, was also known by names such as “Klösterlein zu den Sieben Seligkeiten” (Little Monastery of the Seven Beatitudes). In 1584, the monastery was dissolved as only one nun remained upon the death of the last abbess.

The Cistercian nunnery of Billigheim is situated in the municipality of Billigheim in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 233 meters above sea level.

Of the original monastic buildings, only the monastery church remains today, originally named Marienkirche and now serving as the parish church of St. Michael. This church underwent modern expansion between 1972 and 1975.
