The foundation of Boitzenburg convent occurred shortly before the year 1271, when a community of Cistercian nuns settled here. Under the patronage of Saint Mary, the convent developed into an important religious and economic factor in the Uckermark. It survived the turmoil of the Middle Ages and early modern period until it was dissolved and secularized in 1538 during the Reformation. This marked the end of the monastic use of the site after more than 250 years.
