Kloster Drolshagen

The foundation of Drolshagen convent occurred before the year 1235. A document from 1248 names Countess Mechthild von Sayn and her deceased husband Heinrich III as founders. They secured the convent's existence through numerous donations, including the parish church of St. Clemens in Drolshagen, which granted the convent the right to appoint the parish priest. The convent experienced its heyday in the 13th and 14th centuries. Originally subordinate to the Cîteaux monastery, the affiliation later shifted to the Heisterbach monastery, with close ties to the Marienstatt monastery, whose abbots served as permanent visitors from 1539. Until the 17th century, the convent was reserved for noble daughters. In the 15th century, the first signs of declining monastic discipline appeared, and during the Reformation, the number of nuns significantly decreased. After a period of decline, the convent recovered under Abbess Angela Dorothea Knipping and increasingly consisted of Westphalian noble daughters and daughters of citizens. During the Thirty Years' War, the nuns had to flee to Cologne for a time. Around 1680, the convent buildings were rebuilt. The convent was dissolved in 1803 as part of the secularization. The patron saints of the convent were Mary, Peter (from 1628), and Clement.

The former convent is located in Drolshagen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, at an altitude of approximately 352 meters above sea level.

Of the original convent complex, only the main wing remains today, which is used for public purposes and is protected as a historical monument.
