The former Cistercian convent of Frauenprießnitz, a historical sacred site, is located in Thuringia in the Saale-Holzland district. Its origins date back to the early 13th century, bearing witness to a long history of monastic life in the region.
History+
The first documentary mention of the convent of St. Mauritius in Frauenprießnitz dates to the year 1250. There is no confirmed evidence regarding its settlement by the Moritzkloster in Naumburg. From around 1470, the convent church served as a burial site for the Schenken von Tautenburg, a branch of the Schenken von Vargula. The dissolution of the convent began even before the Reformation. Attempts to revive the monastery failed, and the last provost resigned from his office in 1539. In the subsequent decades, the decay of the convent buildings continued. Today, only the church's choir and parts of the surrounding walls remain. The parish associated with the convent was converted into an evangelical parish in 1539.
