Jesuit Church

In the city of Koblenz, in the federal state of Rhineland-Pfalz, once stood the Cistercian convent in der Lehr. This historic sacred building, which existed from 1244 to 1580, was an important center of monastic life in the region and is now primarily known through the subsequent Jesuit church.

History+

The foundation of the Marienkloster “retro Lere” took place in 1244 by Benigna von Helfenstein, who already led a community of beguines. The supervision of the convent was entrusted to Himmerod Abbey. In 1290, the convent church was consecrated by Archbishop Boemund I von Warsberg, and the community was granted indulgences several times over the years. During the Counter-Reformation, Archbishop Jakob III von Eltz decided to relocate the nuns to Niederwerth Abbey to make the convent buildings in Koblenz available to the Jesuits. After initial resistance from the sisters, which was only broken by the threat of excommunication, the relocation took place in 1580. The nuns moved their convent to the Rhine island of Niederwerth, where it continued to exist until 1811. The Jesuit Church now stands on the site of the former convent church in Koblenz, and its long choir still contains parts from the Cistercian period.
