Itzehoe Monastery

The origins of the monastery date back to the 1230s, when it was initially built on a terp near Ivenfleth at the mouth of the Stör river. In 1263, the Cistercian nuns relocated to Itzehoe, likely to escape the dangers of flooding. From its inception, the monastery was endowed with extensive landholdings, which it expanded over the centuries through donations and acquisitions. It also functioned as a landlord and judicial authority in various areas, collecting tributes from its subjects. Following the Reformation in 1541, the Cistercian convent was transformed into an evangelical women's foundation, a form that persists to this day. The convent, composed of unmarried or widowed noblewomen, is led by an abbess. In 1687, Princess Dorothea Louise of Sonderburg-Augustenburg assumed her office as abbess and had the representative abbess's house built in 1696.

The Itzehoe monastery is situated in the town of Itzehoe in the Steinburg district, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is located at an elevation of approximately 13 meters above sea level.

The Noble Convent of Itzehoe continues to operate as an evangelical women's foundation. The former monastery buildings are still located on the Klosterhof near St. Laurentii Church. The foundation continues to manage extensive land and forest properties in the region.
