Kloster Lilienthal

Protestant parish church

The former Cistercian convent of Lilienthal, also known as St. Mary in the Valley of Lilies, is located in the Lower Saxon municipality of Lilienthal near Bremen. For several centuries, it was a significant religious center in the region.

History+

The foundation of the convent Sancta Maria in Valle Liliorum in 1232 is attributed to Archbishop Gerhard II of Bremen. A first wooden church was built as early as 1230, and in 1231, the first nuns from Walberberg Abbey arrived. Between 1250 and 1262, a stone building replaced the original wooden church. During the 14th and 15th centuries, the convent acquired extensive landholdings and exerted influence over numerous villages in the Weser-Elbe region. With the Reformation, the nuns converted to Lutheranism in 1552. The convent lost importance and was dissolved in 1650 under Swedish rule. The convent complex was subsequently demolished, with only the former convent church remaining.

Location+

The former convent is situated in the municipality of Lilienthal, which is located in close proximity to the city of Bremen in Germany.

On site+

The former convent church remains preserved in the center of Lilienthal to this day and serves as an Evangelical parish church. It is a single-nave brick building with a steep gable. Inside, there are ribbed cross vaults from the 15th century and remnants of wall paintings. A stone relief from around 1400 depicts a seated Madonna with the Infant Jesus. The Baroque pulpit altar dates from 1738. A tombstone from 1385 commemorates Abbess Gertrud Scheene. A bell from around 1300 hangs in the roof turret.
