St. Johannis Kloster
The former Cistercian convent of St. Johannis, also known as Johanniskloster, is located in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck in Schleswig-Holstein. Originally founded as a Benedictine monastery, it evolved over the centuries into an important women's convent, shaping the religious and social life of the city.
History+
The monastery was founded in 1177 by Bishop Heinrich I of Lübeck, who dedicated it to St. John the Evangelist. Initially conceived as a Benedictine monastery for monks from the Braunschweig monastery of St. Aegidien, it was led by Abbot Arnold of Lübeck. Over time, the monastery developed into a double monastery, housing both monks and nuns. This constellation led to disciplinary challenges, which is why the monastery was converted into a pure Cistercian convent in 1246. After the Reformation, it served as a convent for unmarried women until 1803.
