Kloster Marienborn

The convent was founded in 1188 by Cistercian nuns from the convent of Sankt Thomas an der Kyll. Archbishop Philipp von Heinsberg of Cologne transferred the Marienkirche in Zülpich-Hoven to them as the center of their new establishment. The possessions were divided between the mother and daughter convents, with Marienborn receiving the properties located in the Archdiocese of Cologne. In 1190, the Priestly Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit renounced its patronage in favor of the convent and transferred numerous possessions to it. Pope Celestine III confirmed the foundation in 1191. From Marienborn, the convents of Walberberg (1197) and Fröndenberg (1218) were later founded. In the spring of 1246, the highly revered Premonstratensian Hermann Joseph von Steinfeld died at Marienborn convent, where he had briefly served as a Lenten preacher. His Hohenstaufen decorative elements characterize the apse. After a fire in 1466 and further wartime unrest, the Marienkirche was incorporated into the convent in 1525 to secure its economic situation. In 1642, during the Thirty Years' War, the convent was plundered and burned down, after which the sisters moved to Cologne. Another severe fire in 1722 led to reconstruction, which was completed in 1777.

The convent is located in Zülpich-Hoven, a district of Zülpich, in the Euskirchen district, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 184 m above sea level.

Since 1888, the convent buildings have been used by the Cologne Congregation of the Cellitines, who established the Marienborn hospitals here. Today, it serves as a specialized clinic for psychiatry and psychotherapy and is integrated into the regional healthcare provision of the Euskirchen district.
