Foundations, freely accessible

The former Cistercian convent of Marksußra, situated in the Thuringian landscape of the Kyffhäuser district, was once a significant religious center. Although only foundations remain today, archaeological discoveries bear witness to the former presence of this spiritual institution.

History+

The foundation of the convent of Saint Walburga in Suzara, later known as Sußra, took place in 1287 by Knight Albert II of Ebeleben, a vassal of the Counts of Gleichen. Ten sisters from Beuren Abbey and four from Anrode Abbey formed the initial community. The convent existed until its dissolution in 1551. Subsequently, the revenues from the former convent were used to finance the collegiate school in Ebeleben, which operated until 1829 and whose most famous rector was Paulus Götz. Recent archaeological investigations have uncovered the foundations of the convent complex.
