Zisterzienserinnenkloster Rinteln, später Benediktinerinnen

The former Cistercian convent of Rinteln, later inhabited by Benedictine nuns, was a significant spiritual institution in Schaumburg, Lower Saxony. Originally belonging to the Cistercians, it later transitioned to the Benedictine Rule. The early Gothic St. Jacob's Church, with its simple architecture and a roof turret, is now the only remaining structural vestige of the former complex.
History+
The convent was founded between 1203 and 1208 in Bischoperode by Count Adolf III of Schaumburg and Holstein. Around 1225/30, the community was relocated by Count Adolf IV, first to Alt-Rinteln and then around 1238 to its current site in Rinteln. The nuns already lived according to the Benedictine Rule but continued to seek official recognition by the Cistercian Order. Following the introduction of the Reformation in the County of Schaumburg in 1559, the convent was dissolved in 1563 at its own request. From 1621, the buildings served as the location for the Alma Ernestina, a university that closed in 1809. Later, St. Jacob's Church became a garrison church, and from 1817, the former convent buildings housed the academic gymnasium Ernestinum Rinteln. A fire in 1857 damaged the church, which was subsequently renovated. In the late 19th century, most of the former convent wings were demolished, leaving only St. Jacob's Church today.
