Kloster Rulle

The origins of Rulle Abbey date back to its foundation in 1230. Initially established at a different location, it was relocated to Rulle around 1246/47. The convent was dedicated to Saint Mary, and later also to John the Apostle and Evangelist, and Ulrich. Over the centuries, it evolved into an important educational institution for young women from noble families in the region. Despite the Reformation, the convent managed to survive, although the number of its members remained small. In the early 18th century, under Abbess Anna Barbara von Scharbe, a Baroque abbey building was constructed, completed in 1712. The dissolution of the convent occurred in 1802 as part of the secularization process.

The former Rulle Abbey is situated in the municipality of Wallenhorst in Lower Saxony, Germany. The complex is located at an elevation of approximately 80 meters above sea level.

Following its dissolution in 1802, the convent's pilgrimage church was transferred to the Catholic parish of Rulle. The former abbess's house, which is a protected monument, has housed a youth education center of the Diocese of Osnabrück since 1957.
