Kloster Seligenporten

The foundation of Seligenporten Abbey took place in 1242 by Gottfried the Elder of Sulzbürg and his wife Adelheid of Hohenfels. It originated from a community of women who had gathered in Neumarkt around 1230. Already in 1247, the monastery, which bore the name “Felix Porta,” was officially incorporated into the Cistercian Order and confirmed two years later by the Bishop of Eichstätt. The supervision of the convent was entrusted to the Cistercian monastery of Heilsbronn. The nuns predominantly came from noble families in Franconia and the Upper Palatinate, whose dowries contributed to the rapid growth of the monastery's possessions. In 1299, Seligenporten received lower jurisdiction. By around 1500, the monastery's holdings included over 350 properties and the patronage rights for several parishes. During the Reformation, the last abbess had to accept the Protestant church order in 1550, and with her death in 1576, the monastery fell to the sovereign. After the re-Catholicization of the Upper Palatinate in 1625, the monastery was re-established and handed over to the Salesian Sisters in 1671. The secularization of 1803 led to the dissolution of the monastery and the privatization of its assets.

The former monastery is situated in the market town of Pyrbaum in the Upper Palatinate, Bavaria, Germany, and belongs to the Diocese of Eichstätt.

The former monastery church now serves as the parish church for the Seligenporten parish. A large part of the original monastery buildings has been demolished over time. The remaining buildings were taken over by the Salesian Sisters in 1930/31.
