Kloster Teistungenburg

The Teistungenburg convent was founded in 1260 as a daughter house of Beuren, initially for ten nuns. By the end of the 13th century, it had gained independence. The convent held rights and possessions in 40 villages and owned four outworks by 1510. The original complex included, in addition to the convent buildings, a provostry, a Kemenate (stone house), a granary and brewery, various stables, and two gatehouses. In 1525, the convent suffered massive destruction during the Peasants' War, leading the nuns to flee to Duderstadt. The Thirty Years' War also left its mark; after being plundered in 1643, the community became completely impoverished. A comprehensive reconstruction began in 1720, and the convent church of St. Peter and Paul was consecrated in 1724. In March 1809, the entire complex was sold, and on October 16, 1809, the last two nuns left the convent, thereby ending its existence.

The former Teistungenburg convent is located in the Eichsfeld district of Thuringia, Germany, near the village of Teistungen.

Most of the convent buildings were demolished in 1975 due to their proximity to the inner-German border. Only the convent wall, made primarily of white sandstone, and a cattle shed remain. A large part of the historical convent archive is now managed by the Saxony-Anhalt State Archive. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the 28-hectare site was developed into the Teistungenburg Family and Leisure Park, which opened in 1996 with a water park, a hotel, a cultural hall, and a fallow deer enclosure. Since April 1996, the complex has been operated as a 4-star conference, sports, and active hotel. The convent well, which was newly constructed in 1661 and later filled in, was partially uncovered and restored in 1994.
