Kloster Wanzka

The Cistercian convent of Wanzka was founded before 1283, as evidenced by historical documents. Margrave Albrecht III of Brandenburg certified its foundation in 1290, when the convent church and buildings were consecrated by Bishop Heinrich of Havelberg. The convent, dedicated to Mary and Bernard of Clairvaux, enjoyed great popularity and attracted numerous daughters of the surrounding nobility. In 1341, the number of nuns had to be limited to 50. The convent possessed extensive properties. After 1550, the monastic use ceased and the complex was secularized, although the convent continued to exist as an evangelical foundation until 1584. Especially after the Thirty Years' War, the buildings were used as a quarry.

Wanzka Convent is located in the village of Wanzka, south of Neubrandenburg, in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It lies on a small peninsula in Lake Wanzka, nestled in the landscape between Neustrelitz and Neubrandenburg.

The convent church, a long, single-nave building with a 5/8 choir apse, was rebuilt between 1840 and 1843 according to plans by Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel after a fire in 1833. The collapsed vaults were replaced by a flat wooden beam ceiling. The neo-Gothic altarpiece and pulpit were designed by Paul Köppel, and the organ is by Wilhelm Sauer. From April 2016 to summer 2017, the convent church underwent extensive renovation, with the roof, facade, windows, ceiling, and walls being renewed. The cloister buildings are no longer preserved today.
