Kloster Wiebrechtshausen

The origins of Wiebrechtshausen Convent date back to the first half of the 13th century, with the exact founding period estimated between 1207 and 1245. A memorial entry from 1375 names Herewigus as the founder. Hedwig de Gandersheim is recorded as the first abbess, serving until 1232. It is believed that the initial inhabitants of the convent primarily consisted of nuns from the previously dissolved women's convent in Northeim. A documentary mention as a Cistercian convent occurred in 1245. In the course of the Reformation, the convent was reformed along Protestant lines from 1542 under Duchess Elisabeth of Brandenburg, with the Reformation finally introduced there in 1588, and Protestant monastic life is attested until 1663. Detailed descriptions of the building stock from 1670 include the convent church, a nunnery, the ruins of the cloister, and other economic and residential buildings.

Wiebrechtshausen Convent is situated near the town of Northeim in Lower Saxony, Germany. It lies at an elevation of approximately 149 meters above sea level in a valley traversed by the Dünne stream.

The former convent complex is currently utilized as an agricultural estate by KWS-Saatzucht AG. The convent church, a transept-less vaulted basilica built in the Romanesque style around 1230/40, was restored in the 19th century. It is characterized by its simplicity, featuring squat nave arcades and a block-like transverse structure to the west. Inside, a nearly life-sized wooden crucifix from the late 13th century adorns the high altar. A Gothic extension houses the burial chapel for Duke Otto the Quade of Brunswick, whose tomb was restored in 1860.
