The former Cistercian monastery of Georgenzell, situated in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen region of Thuringia, is a historically significant site. It represents a piece of medieval monastic culture and its development up to the Reformation in Central Germany.

The monastery of Georgenzell was founded in the year 1320. It was assigned to the Cistercian order and was placed under the patronage of Saints Mary, George, and Bernard. For over two centuries, the monastery shaped the religious and cultural life in its surroundings. Its existence as a monastic institution concluded in 1531 with its dissolution during the Reformation.
