Zisterzienser Abbey Klostermarienberg

Klostermarienberg is a district in the municipality of Mannersdorf an der Rabnitz in Burgenland, Austria, named after the Marienberg Monastery.

The first traces of settlement date back to the Stone Age. During excavations, eight Celtic smelting furnaces for iron production were uncovered, dated to around 2000 BC. Other significant finds include a Roman tombstone and a Celtic silver coin.

The Cistercian abbey, founded in 1197 by Dominik Bors, the Ban of Slavonia, due to a vow made during a crusade, was a daughter monastery of Heiligenkreuz Abbey from the filiation of Morimond. It was first damaged around 1240 and again around 1440. In 1532, it was destroyed during the Turkish invasions and soon thereafter abandoned by the monks. Subsequently, the abbey was used as a quarry.

In 1680, Klostermarienberg was rebuilt by Cistercian monks from Lilienfeld on behalf of Abbot Matthäus Kolweiß and was a provostry until 1865; up to three confreres were stationed there. The new construction of the parish church and the provostry took place between 1741 and 1780; remnants of the medieval building are located in the cloister. To this day, the parish is cared for by Lilienfeld Abbey. The parish priest holds the title of Superior.

On March 29, 1945, the Red Army advanced into Austrian territory for the first time in the Klostermarienberg area.

The village of Klostermarienberg is also known for its fruit growing. Extensive apple and peach plantations surround the village. Annually, on October 26, the Austrian National Holiday, a chestnut festival takes place.
