Pforta abbey

The origins of the monastery date back to 1101, when it was founded. In 1132, it was settled by Cistercian monks from Walkenried Abbey. Bishop Udo I of Naumburg relocated the monastery to its current site on the Saale in 1137 and named it "Monastery at the Gates." The monks cultivated the surrounding land, making the abbey one of the wealthiest monasteries in eastern Thuringia. By 1209, 27 localities belonged to the monastery. The originally Romanesque abbey church from around 1140 underwent an extensive Gothic reconstruction between 1251 and 1320, integrating parts of the Romanesque structure. Following the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1540. In 1543, Duke Moritz of Saxony founded one of the three Saxon princely schools in the former monastery buildings, which is today's Landesschule Pforta.

Pforta Abbey is situated in the Burgenland district in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 117 meters above sea level. It is located near Naumburg (Saale).

The complex, largely surrounded by a medieval wall, now houses the Landesschule Pforta. Preserved elements include the towerless abbey church, the cloister, the abbot's chapel, the electoral "house," the former gatehouse, and various farm buildings. The former abbey church, which combines Romanesque and Gothic elements, is a central part of the complex.
