Kloster Neuenkamp (Franzburg, Germany)

The foundation of Neuenkamp Monastery took place in 1231, when Prince Wizlaw I of Rügen granted Abbot Arnold of Camp permission to build a daughter monastery. The convent moved into the site, named Rosetum sanctae Mariae, in 1233/34. The endowment included extensive lands, among them the village of Richtenberg with a salt spring, as well as the right to settle colonists of various nationalities and professions. In the following decades, numerous settlements were established on cleared forest land. The monastery acquired extensive landholdings in Pomerania, Rügen, and Mecklenburg, with a focus on mills and fishing rights. By 1257, the Cistercian order already owned a trading post in Stralsund. Around 1280, over 60 monks and 50 conversi lived in the monastery. The monastic church, a large Gothic brick hall church, was built between 1280 and 1300. In 1296, the daughter monastery of St. Nikolaus was founded on Hiddensee. In the 15th century, the monastery faced economic difficulties but recovered under Abbot Johann Sasse. Following the secularization in 1535, the monastery was transformed into a ducal office. The monastic church was converted into a palace church in 1580, with only the southern transept remaining.

The former Cistercian monastery is situated in the Vorpommern-Rügen region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It lies at an elevation of approximately 18 meters above sea level.

Today, only a section of the former monastic church remains, serving as a parish church. This part was transformed into a palace church in the 16th century and is protected as a cultural monument.
