Landskrona Citadel

Construction of the inner castle began in 1549 under the Danish King Christian III, who sought to consolidate his power over the Öresund. By 1560, the castle complex was completed. During the Scanian War, the citadel fell to the Swedes in 1644 but was recaptured by the Danes just one year later. Following the Peace of Roskilde in 1658, the Scania region became Swedish, whereupon the new rulers expanded the fortress between 1667 and 1675 into the most modern complex in Scandinavia. An extensive fortification plan for Landskrona's city center from 1680, which envisioned a bastion belt, could not be implemented due to cost reasons. Instead, a smaller front was built in the southeast direction in the mid-18th century. From the early 18th century, the northern round tower served as a prison, initially for prisoners of war, later for those sentenced to life imprisonment, until 1940, when neutral Sweden began to repurpose the citadel for military use in light of World War II.

The Landskrona Citadel is located in the city of Landskrona in the Landskrona district of the Skåne region, Sweden, at an elevation of approximately 7 meters above sea level.

Today, the citadel is owned by the state and managed by Statens fastighetsverk. Visitors can explore the fortress, which still includes the main building and parts of the four corner towers of the innermost core, as well as the bastion belt, moat, and ravelins.
