Wesel Fortness (Wesel)

Construction of the citadel was ordered in 1687 by Frederick William of Brandenburg. The complex, designed by Johan de Corbin, was based on the principles of the fortress builder Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. It was built in the south of the city and connected to the existing city fortifications. The initial construction phases until 1700 consumed sums, and investments continued to flow into its expansion in subsequent years. The main gate of the citadel was completed in 1718. By the mid-18th century, the south and east sides of the complex were reinforced with works.
