The remains of the ancient town can be visited

The archaeological site of the ancient city of Aquileia in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy, was a transport hub and trade center in antiquity.

History+

In 181 BC, Aquileia was founded as a military colony by a Senate decree after a Celtic advance had been repelled. The city rapidly developed into a trade center, favored by its location at the end of the Amber Road and on the route to the mining region of Noricum. Aquileia was known for its glass industry, iron smelting, and amphora production. Figures such as Julius Caesar and Marcus Aurelius visited the city, which also served as a bulwark against "barbarians." In 170, Aquileia was besieged by the Marcomanni and Quadi.
