The origins of Birklingen Monastery date back to the mid-15th century when a Pietà was placed in a chapel and soon performed miracles. The influx of pilgrims led to Bishop Johann III von Grumbach of Würzburg granting an indulgence in 1457 for visiting the chapel, with the proceeds funding the expansion of the church. The foundation stone for the new church was laid as early as 1458. Bishop Johann summoned Augustinian Canons Regular from Triefenstein and Heidenfeld to Birklingen, and the monastery was officially founded in 1459. Initial difficulties, particularly a lack of new recruits, led to its affiliation with the reformed Windesheim Congregation. In 1462, the monastery was attacked and set on fire during the Bavarian War but was subsequently rebuilt. After its independence within the Windesheim Congregation was confirmed in 1463, construction continued, and the monastery church was consecrated in the same year.

The former monastery is situated in the Birklingen district of the town of Iphofen, which belongs to the Kitzingen district in Bavaria, Germany.

Today, the Augustinian Canons Regular Monastery of Birklingen is protected as an architectural monument in Bavaria, bearing witness to its rich history and importance as a former pilgrimage site.
