History+

The origins of Belfast Castle date back to the late 12th century, when the Normans constructed an initial castle in Belfast city centre. This early fortress later came into the possession of Sir Arthur Chichester, Baron of Belfast. Following a devastating fire in 1708 that destroyed the original castle, the current Belfast Castle was rebuilt at its present location. In 1811, the castle underwent extensive remodelling under the Marquess of Donegall, which gave it its current appearance. After Donegall's death, the family faced financial decline under the 8th Earl of Shaftesbury. Ultimately, his son, the 9th Earl of Shaftesbury, sold the estate to the City of Belfast in 1934. A significant renovation took place in 1978 to preserve the castle.
