Crass Castle

Dendrochronological studies confirm the use of timber from the year 1096. Originally a free court, it lay outside Eltville's city wall, which was built in 1332. It served as a residence for the Mainz family Judens before passing into the possession of Knight Philipp Münch von Lindau. In 1496, the castle was given as a wedding gift to Anna, the owner's daughter, and Knight Johann Frei von Dehrn, and was converted into a manor house. During the Thirty Years' War, the estate was severely damaged by fire. After several changes of ownership, Count Carlomann von Grunne had the property redesigned in the Neo-Gothic style and named it “Schloss Rheinberg”.
