The Freudenberg Castle Ruin, a hilltop castle, is now an accessible ruin.

History+

In 1197, Bishop Heinrich III of Berg initiated the construction of a residential tower, laying the foundation for Freudenberg Castle. Subsequent, albeit smaller, construction phases occurred under Bishop Konrad I of Querfurt from Würzburg. By 1295, the Counts of Wertheim were documented as feudal lords of the castle, notably through Kunigunde von Wertheim. Count Eberhard von Wertheim significantly expanded the complex in 1361, adding a curtain wall and a palas.
