Grebenstein Castle

The origins of Grebenstein Castle date back to the second half of the 11th century, when a first, smaller complex was built. From 1266, Count Ludolf V of Dassel expanded the castle to protect his possessions. The first documented mention occurred in 1272 in the context of border disputes. Through marriage, the castle passed to Otto von Everstein around 1279, who sold it to Landgrave Heinrich I in 1297. Until 1529, the castle was occupied by Hessian officials and played a strategic role opposite Mainz's Hofgeismar. In 1328, Landgrave Ludwig's brother, Ludwig the Junker, received the castle as a paragium.
