Löwenstein Castle

The Counts of Calw presumably erected the first castle complex in the late 11th century, between 1080 and 1090. Already in 1133, the castle was partially destroyed due to inheritance disputes but was rebuilt and expanded in the 12th century. Later, the castle came into the possession of the Habsburgs. In 1287, the adjacent town of Löwenstein was granted city rights. In the 14th century, the castle was extended with curtain walls, and the city wall was extended up to the castle. By the end of the 14th century, the castle and town increasingly came under the influence of the Electoral Palatinate, which finally acquired the entire County of Löwenstein in 1441. The Electoral Palatinate carried out a massive expansion of the complex in the late 15th century.
