Oberburg Castle

The first documented mention of the locality Manderscheid dates back to 973 in a donation deed by Otto II to the Archbishop of Trier. The castle itself historically appears only between 1141 and 1146, during a feud over St. Maximin's Abbey between Count Henry the Blind of Namur-Luxembourg and Archbishop Albero of Trier. The noble lords of Manderscheid are first mentioned in 1142 as witnesses in a donation deed. In the 14th century, Obermanderscheid lent its name to the Electoral Trier administrative district of Manderscheid, which existed until the end of the 18th century. However, the administrative seat was not on the castle but in the cellarage of the neighboring town, which was granted town rights in 1332.
