East of Heubach in the Ostalb district of Baden-Württemberg, the Rosenstein Castle Ruin is situated on a mountain spur. Its location on the edge of the Swabian Alb once gave it strategic importance.

History+

The origins of Rosenstein Castle date back to the 13th century. The local nobility of Heubach likely left their original domicile around the mid-13th century to build a high-altitude castle on the mountain spur. The first written mention of the castle appears in a deed of gift from 1282/83, naming a “Hainricus de Rosenstein.” The lords of the castle were vassals of the Counts of Öttingen. In 1360, the castle, along with Heubach, was pledged to Württemberg, but shortly thereafter reverted to Emperor Charles IV, granting Heubach the status of a free imperial city.
