Stierberg Castle

The first documented mention of the name Stierberg occurred in 1187 by a Bamberg cathedral canon. The Stierberg family died out between 1281 and 1285, after which the castle fell to the Diocese of Bamberg. In 1308, the castle was first mentioned as such in a will. After a change of ownership to the Leuchtenbergers, the complex was sold to Emperor Charles IV in 1356. In the 15th century, the castle changed hands several times, until it finally passed to Count Palatine Johann von Neumarkt-Neuenburg in 1417. During the Landshut War of Succession, Stierberg was captured by Nuremberg in 1504, but later recaptured, with the lower castle suffering damage. After the war, it fell to Nuremberg in 1505, who repaired it and made it the seat of an administrative office.
