Waldau Castle

The origins of Waldau Castle date back to between 1218 and 1236, when it was founded by the Counts of Urach. In the 13th century, ownership transferred to the Counts of Fürstenberg, a collateral line established by Count Heinrich. An event was the partial destruction of the castle in 1325 during a conflict between the city of Villingen and the Fürstenbergers. Following this destruction, the Fürstenbergers decided against rebuilding and transferred the ruin to Bernhard Haugk, a citizen of Rottweil. In 1445, the complex came into the possession of Count Ludwig I of Württemberg. In 1885, the castle ruin was transferred from the House of Württemberg to the State of Württemberg and has since been owned by the State of Baden-Württemberg as its legal successor.
