The Château de la Brûlaire stands on the heights of Gesté in the Mauges. It was built in 1825 as a “folie” (pleasure house) for the Nantes shipowner and former mayor of Nantes François-Marie-Bonaventure, comte du Fou, by the Nantes architect Saint-Félix Seheult. The neoclassical building with Louisiana influences is set in a park of about five hectares with French gardens, an orangerie, moats and outbuildings. After changing ownership, the couple Vivien Macé and Miguel Bertho acquired the estate in 2018/19 and carried out extensive restoration. In 2020 they opened the gastronomic restaurant “Le 1825” (temporarily Michelin-starred) together with guest rooms and event spaces. In January 2026 Louis Riou and Alizée Godet (Lieux d’Exception group) took over the château. Restaurant operations ceased.
The complex now serves exclusively as a private venue for weddings, seminars and similar events. It is in the private ownership of the company Lieux d’Exception and is not protected as a monument historique. Public access is available only in the context of booked events.
