Prüfening Abbey

School

The Prüfening Monastery, a former Benedictine abbey in Regensburg, Bavaria, is now also known as Prüfening Castle. The complex, distinguished by its rich history and well-preserved Romanesque art, houses, among other things, the early Gothic Erminold tomb, the Prüfening consecration inscription, and original Romanesque frescoes.

History+

The Prüfening Monastery was founded in 1109 by Bishop Otto I of Bamberg as a Benedictine abbey. The consecration of the monastery church of St. George took place in 1119, as evidenced by the Prüfening consecration inscription. Monks from Hirsau settled the monastery under the leadership of the first abbot, Erminold. In the 12th century, an extensive monastic library developed, comprising about 300 works. The monastery played an important role in the settlement of other monasteries such as Banz and Münchsmünster. Between 1189 and 1803, the monastery secured the right to ferry across the Danube, whose revenues were a significant source. During the Thirty Years' War, it served as quarters for Bavarian troops. Around 1700, an astronomical tower was erected, which was later rebuilt. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1803, and the buildings were sold. From 1952, Father Emmeram of Thurn and Taxis inhabited the complex and attempted to revive monastic life, but without success.

Location+

The former Prüfening Monastery is located on the western outskirts of Regensburg in Bavaria, Germany, at an altitude of approximately 352 meters above sea level.
