The Château de Limeuil is the former medieval fortress of the village of Limeuil in the Dordogne department (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region) in southwestern France (Périgord Noir). The village, one of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France", is located on a strategic rocky spur at the confluence of the Dordogne and Vézère rivers.
The site has been inhabited since prehistoric and Gallic times (associated with the Lemovices tribe) and later served as a Roman oppidum. The medieval castle is first mentioned in writing in 1179 as Castrum Limolium. As an important fortress, it was particularly contested during the Hundred Years' War: besieged by Louis VIII in 1229, granted to the English after the Treaty of Paris in 1259, and alternately owned by the Galard, Beaufort, and La Tour families (Viscounts of Turenne). After a siege in 1438–1439, it finally returned to French control. The fortress also played a role in the Wars of Religion.
One of its most famous inhabitants was Isabeau de Limeuil (Isabeau de la Tour de Turenne, c. 1535–1609), related to Catherine de' Medici, mistress of Louis I de Bourbon (Prince of Condé), and a celebrated figure of the Renaissance court, praised by poets such as Ronsard and Brantôme.
Little remains of the medieval stone fortress. It was largely dismantled (possibly by the inhabitants themselves after 1453) as a sign of rejection of endless wars. The base of a Gothic keep, a well, underground passages, vaults, and remnants of walls are preserved. Three fortified gates of the village wall (Porte du Récluzou, Porte du Maquisart / Marquisat, and the lower Port gate) are still visible.
In 1902, Dr. Fernand Linarès (born in Limeuil in 1850), personal physician to Sultan Mulay Hassan I of Morocco, acquired the site. He laid out English gardens and erected a crenellated building in a somewhat Moorish style using remaining stones. After his death, the gardens fell into disrepair. The municipality purchased the property in 1997–1998 and handed it over to the "Au Fil du Temps" association in 2007. Today, the Jardins Panoramiques de Limeuil occupy the former castle grounds and offer botanical paths, historical information panels, and excellent views of the river confluence and the village. The building serves for exhibitions and communal events.
