Altenfels Castle (Ruin) (Rösenbeck)

Two separate castle complexes existed on Altenfels mountain in the High Middle Ages. The remains of the West Castle, whose construction dates back to the second half of the 11th century, were investigated in 1968 during an emergency excavation before falling victim to a quarry. It was first mentioned in 1144 in a register of Count Siegfried IV of Boyneburg and Homburg and appeared in the partition treaty of Henry the Lion's sons in 1202. Later, it came into the possession of the Archbishops of Cologne. In 1294, Siegfried von Westerburg promised protection to the citizens of Brilon if they helped with its reconstruction.
